Fandom Commentary : Civil War

VM : Vance McCarty (Jacob)

R : Raven (Ginny)

WS : Wise Sage (Josh)

RL : Red Lanyard (Al)

WS : So here is my intro: Captain America: Civil War is in a 3 way tie for best MCU movie with Winter Soldier, and Black Panther. Even if you disagree with that, this point is unassailable: No other MCU movie has a higher degree of difficulty. Its juggles so many storylines and personalities, and yet still maintains narrative coherence.

Also, this movie is better than the Comic it’s based on.

R : Poor little bucky baby.

RL : And yes, this movie is way better than the comic it’s based on.

WS : I think Winter Soldier is the most threatening and intimidating villain in the MCU.

VM : His performance is incredibly impressive, especially in this film.

R : I didn’t think you would consider him one.

WS : Bucky isnt a villain. Winter Soldier is.

VM : I’ve also always found it interesting that the Russo’s show us the same scene 3 different times and gives us something new with it each time.

RL : Remembed that time WS killed Tony’s parents and cap attacked Tony for being mad about it.

VM : That’s not how it happend.

RL : We shall see.

Crossbones fight is so good.

VM : This was the first main film that they put out following Whedon’s exit. I think the Russo Brothers as Directors and Markus and Mcfeely as Writers all do a great job of not only making this a great continuation for Captain America following Winter Soldier but also a fantastic set up for the next 2 years of Films.

WS : Black Widow and Scarlet Witch on the same screen is too much.

VM : Right!?! This Avengers team is great!

WS : I meant that they were both dimes, but yes.

VM : Fair Points.

RL : A stand alone movie with those two would be lit

VM : Steve kicking the truck into the guy is always great.

WS : One cool thing about these movies is how progressively more competent the key characters get.

VM : Very true, rewatching these films have really showcased that for me.

RL : Here we see Scarlet Witch again being insanely useful.

Oh Damn, Widow on a Bike again

VM : She still won’t get an action figure.

WS : Cap is just dominant.

Also, I love the new Redwing.

R : That part is so hard to watch 💔 poor wanda

RL : Ya Know, what else could she have done there? She gets lambasted for doing that, but it honestly would’ve killed more people if it had been left at ground level

R : I agree, but i just feel bad for how bad she feels

VM : I fully agree. I understand Tony’s stance on the accords but honestly It makes more sense following Age Of Ultron and Sokovia than it does in the opening scene.

RL : Young rdj is a Babe.

WS : Improvement number one over the comic: Tony Stark has real pathos, as opposed to Mark Millar’s “Tony is extreme Bush/Cheney to the point of parody.”

VM : This scene also shows how important Tony is even as a Philanthropist let alone a superhero.

Or what Josh Said.

RL : That really is so much damn money for all of those students, like almost unrealistic.

VM : Alfre Woodard does a beautiful job in this scene. Honestly, this scene is why the film is better than the comic in my opinion.

WS : Alfre Woodard should talk: shes killed so many people taking over Harlem.

RL : Who could’ve predicted such indignance from Black Mariah.

VM : One of the few major plotholes of the MCU. (Alfre Woodard plays Mariah Dillard in Luke Cage)

WS : By the way, this movie sets up the arrogance of T’Chaka in a great way for Black Panther.

VM : I loved the scene between Steve and Wanda here. “This Job, we try to save as many people as we can. Sometimes that doesn’t mean everybody. But if we can’t find a way to live with that then Next time, maybe nobody gets saved.” Such a perfect quote for Captain America.

WS : Major difference between Cap and Tony, Cap accepts being wrong.

VM : Absolutely he does!

Tony does too but he goes about it the wrong way.

WS : He’s willing to pass his wrongdoing off to the government. That’s the difference between Tony and Cap.

R : I agree with Vision, Doors are useless.

Also the secretary of state is annoying.

RL : Oh look, Red Hulk!

Good continuation of his character. His hatred for Banner transitions well to the rest of the Avengers.

WS : Last time we saw this guy, he tried to nuke Manhattan.

VM : Ross wasn’t involved in that. the world security council was.

WS : I meant in The Incredible Hulk.

VM : Oh yeah! Man, it’s interesting that even Loki, Ultron and Thanos never tried nuking Manhattan but the Government has twice in these movies.

R : The scenes he shows, would have been worse had the avengers not been there lol like…?????
They actually wouldn’t be having this conversation had they sat back and watched everything go to ishhh

VM : Indeed, particularly with the aforementioned Nukes involved.

WS : That’s actually very realistic though.

RL : It helps to remember Ross’s first experience with enhanced people was Banner, who was insanely destructive. You can even heaf it in his voice when it cracks a little as he mentions Banner.

VM : Yeah but his 2nd experience was with Abomination…who he creates.

WS : Ross is the worst.

RL : Yeah, so he wants to control them some other way. If not from creating, then regulating.

WS : Which is stupid.

RL : Stupid in theory, but pretty good writing for side-villain motivation, which ross is totally a Side-Villain for this film.

VM : He definitely is.

Alright, I’m curious, Is Zemo’s plan too convoluted to be realistic to any of you? Cause I personally don’t think it is but a lot of people complained about it.

WS : Nope.

RL : I mean, this movie just shows that Zemo is a literal super genius with a lot of motivation.

R : And yeah, i actually think zemo’s plan is brilliant and I get his motivation.

VM : I still back Steve here, by the way.

R : Same

Nick Wild : You can edit this out if you want but I’m there in spirit because I love Civil War and #TeamSteve Always! (Nick Wild cameos are second only to Stan Lee Cameos.)

R : If the accords were a thing in the first avengers, ross would have nuked NYC. So 🤷🏻‍♀️

RL : They do a really good job of showing both sides of the argument. Much better than in the comic.

R : Yeah, I get that.

WS : I back Steve, until he doesn’t tell Tony that Bucky killed his parents.

R : Same, Josh.

RL : Also, pretty messed up that they didn’t call him. Just a “Hey, your eternal love died” Text.

R : Yeah, well. That whole storyline is the worst.

Also, side note….super weird watching emily vancamp in anything after watching her on “revenge”

VM : A lot of people hated that they gave “No, you move” to someone besides Steve. I actually love that they made it his motivation for everything.

WS : I’d rather Cap say it.

VM : Ah, our first major disagreement.

WS : As usual, Natasha is the heart of the Avengers.

RL : Did Vision signing surprise anyone else?

VM : Not to me, Vision sees the importance of them.

WS : Vision is Soulless.

VM : Well that seems a bit much.

WS : Sorry.

VM : T’Challa!!!

How do you feel about T’Challa supporting the Accords?

R : He changes his mind doesn’t he?

VM : That’s a good point. He mainly just wants Revenge in this film until the finale with Zemo.

WS : I love Black Panther, but it is hypocritical for him to support the accords.

RL : I feel like at this point he wants to honor his father’s wishes and will follow his lead on it, I’m not sure he’s supporting it completely out of his own opinion.

WS : Hypocritical of T’Chaka as well.

RL : Absolutely. Hypocrisy is T’Chaka’s deal.

WS : T’Chaka is basically like, “I know we have enough weapons to wipe all of our enemies off the earth, but let’s censure the Avengers.”

VM : I love T’Challa so much I almost supported the Accords. Him and Steve might be my 2 favorite characters honestly.

And Zemo might be my favorite Villain. I’d have to think more about it though.

R : He was in my Top 3.

There’s that Handsome Boi!

He just wants some plums!

WS : Bucky is all like, “I just want to buy some plums, not blow up world leaders.”

R : I can relate.

VM : For the record, I’m fine if Bucky becomes Captain America after April 26th.

WS : For the record, Shut your mouth.

R : Not all of us are ready to talk about that.

RL : I would rather see Sam do it, but I would be fine with Bucky too.

R : Stop it!

VM : “That’s smart. Good strategy.”

Also, I just know realized how well that Quote works following Ginny’s Anger.

R : I ADORE watching bucky and cap work together. Omg.

RL : That door has an impressive Lock.

VM : Picking up a Battering Ram, one handed.

WS : Cap is so disappointed in Bucky there.

VM : Black Panther!

WS : Uh Oh, it’s a Cat-Man.

RL : What an Incredible Job this movie does. Introduces both BP and Spidey.

R : I forgot Spidey was in this movie!!! OMG!

This is kinda like that Scene from Aladdin and I’ve been watching it with the Aladdin song in my head.

and no, I haven’t been drinking.

VM : Like when he and Abu  were stealing the bread.

R : Yeah, and the guards are like the Harem Girls.

VM : So, is Bucky Abu?

R : No. Aladdin.

VM : So, wait, is Steve Abu?

R : Yes.

WS : I hate this correlation.

VM : They would both like Amazing in Fezs and Vests.

Also, we are missing an amazing chase scene.

RL : This motorcycle sequence is so sick!

R : Who is that?

WS (The sarcasm is real) : Best line in the whole movie! “Congratulations Cap, you’re a criminal.”

R : Random character number 74283 needs to get off his high horse, tbh

VM : AKA War Machine.

/Jafar, apparently.

RL : Love this Scarlet/Vis Scene.

So Wholesome.

R : Going into Jarvis mode.

VM : I like that Bucky is so powerful that they give him his own portable cell block.

R : And he’s probably like “so lame. I just wanted plums”

VM : I mean, has he eaten?

R : That’s my main concern.

WS : T’Challa is a bad dude.

RL : In the words of Mark Jackson he’s a baaaaadddd man!

WS : Stop that, Al.

R : Also, i like bilbo way better in the black panther.

RL : He does great, but I can’t help but feel like Freeman is underutilized in that role.

R : In this movie, Yes.

VM : I like that Tony and Natasha are genuinely trying to help them here.

“Ultron, My Fault” Always a hilarious line to me.

“Sometimes I wish I could.”
“No, you don’t.”

WS : Question : Why does Pepper want Tony to stop?

R : Because she, like jane foster, is the worst.

RL : Probably because she loves him and he’s almost died like a dozen times

VM : I’m with Al.

R : Yeah, i guessssss what Al said.

But….still annoying.

WS : I disagree with Pepper’s assessment. As El Madre used to say, “Women fall in love with men for who they are, and then spend their lives trying to change them.”

R : FREAKING YES. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

VM : Linda Hardesty makes an appearance in the Commentary! As she should!

R : And Jane and Pepper tend to do that.
But 🤷🏻‍♀️

RL : Tony makes a lot of good points there.

VM : He does but I love that when Steve is coming around, Tony reminds him of Wanda and he’s just like “We were so close!”

R : Man. This is terrifying, they literally have no idea what is about to happen. No way to see it coming.

RL : Also, just to say, this is NOT how psych assessments would work in this situation.

WS : Well, he’s a bad guy, Al.

RL : I’m just saying if anyone in shield knew anything about psychology that whole interview would’ve totally tipped them off.

VM : “To see an empire fall.” Daniel Bruhl is amazing in this film.

R : I want tony’s glasses.

VM : Will Winter Soldier make an Appearance in the Black Widow film? What do you guys think?

WS : “You could at least recognize me,” is the most mysterious line in the entire MCU.

R : The way he rises up after landing send goosebumps down my arm.

Also, I disagree.

“Budapest”

She sees him in Winter Soldier and they have a similar fight scene.

WS : Yeah, that ain’t what she is referencing.

R : I think it is. But yeah, he’ll probably be in black widow.

WS : That’s essentially saying, “You could at least recognize me from the last time you were brainwashed.” That makes no sense.

R : Then by your logic why would you say that at all to some one that is brain washed? I always thought she was being witty when she said that.

WS : I think She’s trying to reach deeper.

RL : Well now I just don’t know.

R : I think we are overthinking it. She doesnt act like she knows him in winter soldier.

WS : She knows of him.

VM : Chris Evans tore a muscle during this scene.

RL : I would too if I tried to hold a helicopter.

VM : This scene was terrifying.

R : Do we ever find out where the rest of these guys are?

WS : Umm… yeah?

VM : Zemo kills them at the end.

WS : But it’s a spoiler.

VM : My B.

RL : Jacob don’t give a @&^%!

WS : AHHHHHH SPOILER!!!!!

R : 🙃🙃🙃 I mean, ive seen it before, but its been a looooong time.

VM : You both already talked about Bucky killing Tony’s Parents.

I love that the actual “Civil War” isn’t Really Tony VS. Steve, it’s Tony wanting to bring in Steve with as little of a fight as possible. Way more natural than the comic book version.

RL : YEAH!

VM : Tom Holland really is the best Spider-Man

WS : Spidey and Tony have great chemistry.

R : That they do.

RL : Little nod to young Pete being overwhelmed by his spider sense

Such a good rundown of his origin without rehashing it.

VM : “Don’t tell Aunt May”

R : Aunt Hottie.

Even Hawkeye is like “Accords? Nah”

VM : Basically.

WS : Hawkeye is the most down to earth Avenger.

RL : Old Papa Hawkeye.

WS : Of course he hates the Accords.

VM : The accords would reveal where he lives in the long run.

RL : Lord, Wanda is Powerful.

“I can’t control their fear. Only my own.” Such a terrific line for Wanda.

VM : Early Dora Milaje!!

WS : Love how Falcon and Bucky hate each other.

R : See? She trusts Cap.

I think they are more annoyed by each other than hate.

Steve is so embarrassed.

WS : It’s still great.

VM : I love that Scott Lang is all of us.

R : Bobby Newport.

WS : Paul Rudd Rules.

RL : Tony’s Anger is so real.

WS : Rhodey you wanna take Cap” is the funniest line in the entire MCU.

R : Why would they send poor little antman to black widow? Lmaoooo

VM : This entire scene is just a fun time…until Vision gets there.

R : “Aint gonna tickle”
Who is this dude?

VM : “Just can’t seem to miss.”

RL : Man. The spidey fight is just laughable.

WS : I love the Spidey fight!!!!

RL : Its awesome!!!!

It’s Just. You know. He just toys with them.

Because he’s Spider-Man.

R : The actors got so close from that scene lol

VM : Rewatching this makes me so excited for the Bucky/Falcon show.

R : Word

RL : Ugh, that Scarlet Witch costume is so good.

R : Scarlett witch puts everyone in their place lol

VM : There’s so much happening on the screen right that it’s honestly heard to comment on it!

A fantastic back and forth between the two of them.

RL : “That thing doesn’t obey the laws of physics at all” Favorite Line

Also, I don’t think that trailer would’ve given spidey any trouble

WS : Kind of love Hawkeye vs Panther.

R : I think black panther has my favorite lines in the movie.

RL : Ronin staff sighting.

VM : Plus, I just realized that Black Panther breaks his bow.

WS : Black Widow, at the end of the day, is the only one who makes the right decision consistently in this movie.

VM : She really is the best.

Man, I hate this scene.

WS : Tony doesn’t even look at Sam.

RL : We start to see Tony get more and more overwhelmed and his motivation change more and more from guilt to anger.

WS : I think the fact that Bucky is not looking for a absolution makes him a great character.

Hey, Widow dropping truth bombs.

VM : As she does.

Here’s the thing, Vision could’ve saved Rhodey honestly.

R : And Wanda could have too.

RL : And T’Challa with vibranium.

R : A lot of options.

Tony is like “aw hells bells”

VM : “Good gracious, the Captain was right!”

R : Ope, here comes this $@#&!*#(Ross)

VM : Hawkeye plays the Daredevil part from the Comic.

RL : Good connection.

WS : Yeah Cap is not off the reservation.

RL : Sounds like Stark admitted he was wrong.

VM : He totally did!!

R : 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

VM : T’Challa following like Boba Fett in Empire.

WS : RDJ as Tony has been better than the last 10 best actor winners. Dont @ me.

RL : @JoshuaHardesty/WiseSage

Dont tell me what to do.

R : Sometimes Tony Stark’s references remind me of Lorelai Gilmore.

VM : Bucky waiting for Steve’s order is a great moment.

WS : Zemo is Scary

RL : “And so will you”

VM : He really is.

That look is what allowed Thanos to win.

RL : Yeah. Hard to side with cap here.

R : I wonder if the outcome would have been different if steve had told tony before that moment.

WS : I dont know. But he should have.

R : I still side with cap overall, but that particular situation could have been handled differently.

“I remember all of them.”

RL : Iron man should be dead there.

For all cap knew, he just broke Tony’s neck

WS : “I don’t care. He killed my mom”

VM : There’s the shot.

RL : And here T’Challa does the cruellest thing in this movie.

WS : You think?

VM : Cruel for Zemo yet Perfect for Phase 4.

Damn, this movie is even sadder after watching Infinity War honestly.

“Did it?” Is still the most terrifying line in the MCU.

R : Agreed.

Stan 💔💔

WS : It might change your mind when Thanos shows up, Rhodey.

R : Nah. Just chill til the government needs ya.

VM : Steve’s message is perfect.

R : So freaking good.

Is T’Challa this wise in the comics?

Like literally, ever word he says is Perfection.

VM : “Let them Try” makes even more sense after seeing Black Panther.

Yes he is. There have been multiple recent stories where he was the only one making sense.

WS : T’Challa and me are the only people who know Namor needs to die.

VM : Alright guys : Biggest Strength?

WS : Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.

VM : Just, in general?

WS : Yes.

VM : That’s Fair.

WS : The movie asks you to see two sides. If they falter a bit, the movie fails.

R : I mean, yeah.
But also, Zemo.

And I feel like I say this everytime, but the writing.
How you’re able to see both sides in this movie is well done.

VM : I fully agree. In both major conflicts, I agreed with Both Sides. I lean more towards Cap but that’s more because of my natural bias for him as my favorite character.

RL : I agree with ginny; zemo is probably the best marvel villain except maybe thanos.

WS : They are so good, that Tony is getting ready to kill a helpless Bucky and we are like, “Yeah, okay.”

I mean, Ginny isn’t, but you get my point.

VM : Alright, Does the film even have a Weakness?

WS : No, not really.

R : Rhodey, and all jokes aside, hes just super annoying.

And yeah, there were like 3 characters that could have saved him and/or healed him. So 🤷🏻‍♀️

RL : Not that I can think of right now.

WS : Him calling Cap a criminal is the dumbest line in the MCU.

R : That too.

VM : Same, I agree with Josh’s assessment from earlier that this, Winter Soldier and Black Panther are the 3 best films.

Alright, Russos or Whedon? Do you think Whedon could’ve handled this film as well?

R : Ooh, Huh, Ask again when we watch infinity war again lol

RL : I love Whedon to death, but I’ll give it to Russo’s

Whedon would’ve handled it well but differently I feel like

The tone would be different, and I’m not sure it would have fit as well

WS : I’ll say Russos, but it’s an unfair question.

VM : It is a bit of an unfair question honestly because they’re vastly different films and I think that’s actually why they work so well.

Alright then, we’ll end with MVP character in the film.

RL : Spider-Man because I’m biased.

WS : Tony and Steve.

R : Black panther and black widow.

RL : My answer is going to be Spidey whenever he is in a movie.

VM : I’m actually gonna go with Bucky on this one. He has such a haunted past that every scene that he’s in makes me want to see more of him and see him succeed in being the hero we need him to be. His reluctance to fight is something that will carry over into the next film as we’ll see next week.

Sebastian Stan is a tour de force of an actor and I can’t wait to see him grow even more in future films.

Next week we’ll be watching Infinity War and then we’ll be all ready for Endgame. Thanks again for Joining us this week!
