The State of Things

Whoa, a month away from writing on here and a bunch of stuff happens! I promise that I didn’t forget about you all. I’ve been focusing on my own novel a lot recently and hope to have something for you soon. However, it’s about time I caught up on everything. We’ve got a lot to cover so these are some quick hits but if you’d like me to elaborate on anything then please let me know. Most of this happened at Comic Con but there are a few other things mentioned here.

James Gunn

Obviously this is going to be the first story on here. This was a huge story but if you didn’t know then James Gunn was fired from Disney for offensive tweets from almost a decade ago. Now, I will not defend the tweets by any means because they were absolutely horrendous. The reason I’m upset is because Gunn isn’t defending them either and he still got fired. He apologized multiple times and everyone who has worked with him has come out and said that he is a completely different person.

I personally want Disney to re-hire him as do many people. I’m not boycotting Disney, I still love Disney but they made a massive mistake here and I hope they can fix it in time. So here’s hoping we can get him back before Guardians Of The Galaxy 3.

Venom

Look, I tried to be excited for this movie but the final trailer just looked terrible in my opinion. I don’t really understand why this movie is necessary. I understand loving Venom but I honestly don’t want to see a film with him if there’s no involvement with Spider-Man. Yes, I know we could see Spider-Man in the film or he could be mentioned or something like that but I just hate the idea of him not being central to Venom’s origin because I believe that Spider-Man is essential to Venom’s origin but maybe I’ll be proven wrong come October.

Also, I can barely understand him. They really need to clean up his voice a bit. I get that he’s an alien symbiote but still.

Shazam

I genuinely loved this trailer. It looked like a perfect comedy but I do hope that they still make it interesting as well as funny. My brother said it best when he said he was worried that they would just make him Superman with lightning instead of the boy who has the amazing abilities of Shazam. If you didn’t know Shazam is an acronym for :

Solomon’s Wisdom

Hercules’ Strength

Atlas’ Stamina

Zeus’ Power

Achilles’ Courage

Mercury’s Speed

The occasional problemĀ  with the character is that they forget about the abilities that don’t involve Flight, Strength and Power but they could easily fix that in this film and we’ll just wait and see.

Aquaman

Although my thoughts on Justice League were primarily negative, I did enjoy Jason Momoa as Aquaman. Yeah, he has some silly lines and yes he’s not the perfect representation of the character from the comics but I understand the direction with making him the outcast and making Ocean Master the traditional atlantean warrior. The movie looks pretty interesting and I’m really excited to see Black Manta in the film.

Titans

You know, it’s weird that I saw 4 trailers from DC properties at comic con and I loved 3 of them…but one nearly ruined it.

Titans is just insulting. It’s not just bad, it’s insulting to us. “But Vance, how can you say this when you defended Teen Titans Go for years and even defended the early set photos of this show?”

Well, first off, I defended the photos saying that we should wait and see. I waited and saw that I hated it. The other thing I defended was Anna Diop as Starfire because I absolutely believe that we can have a woman of color as Starfire but her costume does look silly.

As for Teen Titans Go, I will always defend it because yes it’s absolutely ridiculous but it’s a commentary on Toxic Nerd culture and that’s why it’s ridiculousness is perfect for the show it’s trying to be.

I just hated everything I saw in the Titans Trailer but honestly the main thing is the attempt to make everything edgy. Dick Grayson doesn’t work as an edgy hero. He just doesn’t and there really isn’t going to be anything that will change that for me. Especially because this is a Dick Grayson on his way to becoming Nightwing. If he was this earlier in the relationship between him and Batman then that works cause he’s younger and angrier following the death of his Parents but this is just awful. I can go on about why this doesn’t work but honestly I don’t wanna talk about it anymore. I’ll give them a pilot episode but unless they really impress me then they’ve already lost a viewer.

Young Justice

In complete contrast, Young Justice looks absolutely perfect. The trailer pulls a recap of the finale for season 2 and then shows us two minutes of new footage which sets the stage for the new season and showcases a few of the new characters that we’ll be seeing. I honestly don’t have much more to say then this is one of my favorite versions of the DC Stories. All of the characters are so well written and I genuinely think that everyone needs to watch this show if they want to know more about DC.

Marvel Comics

The first thing we’ve heard about Marvel is that Donny Cates will be spearheading the new Marvel Knights line-up starting in November. The original Marvel Knights line focused on the street level heroes like Daredevil, Punisher and Black Panther. They were typically darker storylines that focused on more realistic elements of the Marvel Universe. No titles have been officially announced but they will start off with a One-Shot written by Cates with art by Mike Deodato.

The other big thing that’s been released is that Uncanny X-Men will finally make it’s return as the flagship title of Marvel’s favorite mutants. They haven’t announced the writer or artist for the series but I’m ready to see them return to a traditional book…or at least as traditional as the X-Men can be.

DC Comics

Heroes in Crisis is the next big event from DC. They’re focusing on the mental health issues of being a superhero such as Depression, PTSD and other illnesses that with the business. I think it’s a story that needs to be told and I’m excited to see how they handle it.

Also, Grant Morrison is returning to DC to write Green Lantern and I couldn’t be happier. Morrison is insane and yes, his stories can be difficult to understand at times but they’ve said that this will be a return to basics for Hal and the corps and I’m very excited for it.

There’s obviously so much happening right now and I’m so excited for so much. Stay tuned here for more updates as we get them. No more extended breaks for me!
