Why An Old Republic Trilogy Is The Most Brilliant Choice for Everyone.

I’ve made it known that I love the new Star Wars Films and I love most of the choices that they’ve made but one of the places where I’ve disagreed is their choice of the films that have come out between the main saga entries. Both Rogue One and Solo had many merits in their own right but Rogue One didn’t really feel like a Star Wars film and even though I really enjoyed Solo I still had to ask why we needed that film. When Disney first took over the license they said that all previous books were now non-canon, I had never invested too much in the books and some that I read were good and some were pretty bad and while I understood where Disney was coming from with wanting to control the narrative I also understood where the people who had read Star Wars books for over 20 years would be upset as well. Which is where I had this thought : “If all of the Old Republic stuff is non-canon too then maybe the saga films will be about the future of the series while the anthology films will be about the ancient past of the series.” This really excited me initially but then we didn’t hear anything about the Old Republic for a long time…until last week when it was rumored that the trilogy of Star Wars Films from Benioff and Weiss were going to be set in the Old Republic.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are the creators and showrunners of Game of Thrones. The show delivers on ancient pasts, magic, lore, big battles and most importantly, the ability to keep fictional politics interesting. We have to think about this from the standpoint of the Prequels(Hear me out) because one of the primary aspects of the prequels was the politics behind everything. You might not remember all of that because Midi-Chlorians, Jar-Jar and Hating Sand were too in your face and that’s fair but trust me, after watching multiple interviews and thinking about these films way too much I know that Lucas ultimately wanted it to be something similar to a Political Drama in Episodes II and III. Now if the politics were important right before the Empire destroyed them then think about the politics of setting up that Republic in the first place. I may have just bored you to sleep with that thought but you can’t truly deny that when they talk about who owns what land in Game Of Thrones that it is pretty interesting and that’s because of the power of the writing. I truly believe that Benioff and Weiss will be the perfect fit for the series and I also think that this could work in uniting some of the Star Wars fans that have been put off of the new films…Ok, maybe not but it’s a nice thought.

Now here’s the real question, when exactly is it set and will we see any familiar faces? Darth Bane is currently(To the best of my knowledge) the only Character from the Old Republic that is still canon. I’d be fine if we brought back Revan, Malek, Bastilla, Carth, Exar Kun, Ulic Qel-Droma and all of the others but I think it’s more likely that we’ll see a new Story that may mention some of the others but not actually feature them. Personally I’d love to see more about the origins of the force itself especially after seeing Acch-To in The Last Jedi.

What are your thoughts though? What would you like to see? Let me know in the comments!
