Get Hyped! WiseSage’s Top Picks for 2019

The only hype countdown that matters. Let’s get right into it!

10. Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark

Back when I was young, knowledgeable seer (as opposed to the Wise Sage), this collection of short stories and accompanying artwork fueled both my appetite for horrific morbidity and unwanted nightmares.  I have a love/hate relationship with this book.  On one hand, I appreciate the powerful imagery presented in this collection of tales.  On the other hand, I must ask why this was/is a children’s book?  That question will probably not be answered, but what we can be assured of is that master craftsman Guillermo Del Toro will give us a worthy adaptation of this classic.

9.  War of the Realms by Jason Aaron

The last few event comics put out by Marvel have been, in my opinion, pretty disappointing.  Enter Jason Aaron, as he has decided to end his epic run on Thor with a universe spanning battle royale of the realms.  Aaron has his flaws as a writer, but very few people write epic, Helm’s Deep style battles as well as he does, and I am looking forward to seeing what he does with the heroes of the Marvel Universe in this comic.

8.  Spider-Man: Far From Home

I thought that Tom Holland’s first full-time foray into the web-slingers tights was near perfect.  By giving us a teen comedy/drama, the MCU proved they can play in any yard they want.  Now, they have to follow it up.  I’m not a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, and I wish they had just let Zendaya be Mary-Jane, but I love this actor, so I am willing to overlook these, admittedly pedantic, nit-picks.

7.   Captain Marvel

While I would be excited by a Captain Marvel story in general, the fact that Marvel is announcing her as a major game-changer, and apparent tide-turner in the fight against Thanos, has this fanboy all-in on this movie.  Plus… Goose!!!

6.  Detective Pikachu

I am trying to temper my excitement for this movie, just in case it ends up being a tragic mistake.  But… Come on, you know I’m 100 hundred percent behind this movie.  Please do not screw this up, Legendary.

5. Detective Comics #1000

Because… Batman.

4.  Triple-A Sony Titles

This is a cheat because no one really knows anything about Sony’s plans for the second half of the year, but if we somehow get The Last of Us 2, or Ghosts of Tsushima, or Death Stranding, then it will be a successful year for Sony.  Once again, we have zero confirmation, but in my opinion at least one of those games will be out this year.

2.  Tie!!! Avengers: Endgame or Star Wars Episode 9

I cannot pick between these two.   I am so amped for the conclusion/ new beginning of the MCU, and I am curious to see if they can stick the landing in this movie.  While I am, and always will be, critical of the last 15 minutes of Infinity War, Marvel Studios has earned the right to say, “just wait, it is going to be amazing.”

As for Star Wars, well I am a little more hesitant.  It is not that I believe the movie will be a failure, or will be anything less than amazing.  Honestly, I am just tired of Star Wars fans.  I am convinced it is the worst fandom in the world; worse than professional wrestling, anime, and Tool fans.  But the conclusion of Rey’s journey, the Knights of Ren, the rebirth of the Force among a new generation; all this keeps the Star Wars fandom kindled in my heart.

1. Game of Thrones: The Final Season

“The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword.”

“The things I do for love.”

“Never forget what you are.  The rest of the world will not.  Wear it like armour, and it can never be used to hurt you.”

“When you play the Game of Thrones, you win or you die.”

“The Night is Dark and full of terrors.”

“A Lannister always pays his debts.”

“You know nothing, Jon Snow.”

“Chaos is a ladder.”

“A girl is Arya Stark of Winterfell.  And I’m going home.”

“Leave one wolf alive and the sheep are never safe.”

“Jaime.  My name is Jaime.”

“Hold the door.”

“I am your son.  I have always been your son.”

“Tell Cersei.  I want her to know it was me.”

“He’s never been a bastard.  He’s the Heir to the Iron Throne.”

DUM DUM DUHDUHDUH DUM DUHDUHDUM (duh duh didda dum dum didda dum dum)

Yeah, it’s going to be great.
