Fandom Horrorfest : Haunting Of Hill House 1

Hey guys! Just a heads up that you can watch along with me each day and then come back here and check out the recap, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments! This first recap is spoiler free But be warned that the following recaps are full of spoilers.

The haunting of Hill House is something that I was late to but I’m very excited to watch it. I’ve heard that it’s one of the better horror shows out there and also I now have a perfect opportunity to jump on Red Lanyard’s Horrorfest Bandwagon.

Starting off this series was nerve wracking to say the least. I’ve started reading the book and really enjoy it so far and I absolutely adore the 1963 film and basically hate the 1999 version. So when I heard they stretched this series out to 10 episodes, I was apprehensive to say the least but even the first few minutes  nails the exactly what I wanted from the series.

See, my favorite form of horror in any form of media is atmospheric horror and from the very first scene you get that in this show. The reason this story has always worked is because there’s no big bad villain, there’s no monster after them, it’s the house. It’s always been the house and the surroundings themselves being the adversary is more frightening to me than any  slasher or horrific monster could ever be.

The first episode lays a lot of ground for the story and introduces the major characters of the five Crain siblings and their father and consistently goes back to the start of their tale from when they were children growing up in Hill House. You don’t really learn a lot about the overarching story yet but you get an idea of it and have to suffer through what I consider to be the most brutal jump scare in television history.
