Hey everyone! Red Lanyard here with another weekly jam session so we can check in on each other and share what’s been keeping us sane during quarantine/pandemic time. Check your vibes and gush about your favorite recent media consumption here!
What I’ve Been Doing
This week has been a little low on media consumption due to my wedding being next weekend! So, most of what I’ve been doing has been such fun activities as booking caterers and finalizing table assignments. But I’ve gotten a little gaming and watching done . . .
The two main games that have been occupying my time this week are Enter the Gungeon and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The former is a wonderful bullet-hell roguelike available on most gaming platforms! An indie project by developer Dodge Roll, the Gungeon is a delightful mash of tight mechanics, roguelike elements, and pop culture references that make every playthrough unique! I’ve yet to reach the end of the gungeon because, honestly, I’m not very good at the game, but it hasn’t stopped me from logging plenty of hours with more to come. Breath of the Wild, a game which I’m sure everyone has heard of by now, has been quite a mix of joy and frustration. Never before have I encountered a game with so many things I love held back by so many things I hate. I’m still plugging away at it, but so far it hasn’t touched the spot for my favorite Zelda game, the exquisite masterpiece Link to the Past.
Finally, it’s never too early to start the horror season! I recently watched two horror films: a late 70s classic Phantasm and a 2014 found footage film The Taking of Deborah Logan. How I had never seen Phantasm before is beyond me; it’s a delightful romp that’s definitely light on the scares but heavy on the cheese and gore. It hits all the right notes for good 40-year-old horror, so much so that my fiance even expressed, “I’m not sure this is good, but I’m actually really enjoying it!” The Taking of Deborah Logan scratched my constant found footage and possession movie itches, and it does both things rather well. It’s an interesting take on the possession genre, and while its treatment of dementia may be troubling for some viewers, I was actually impressed at the honesty with which the movie displays the struggles of that disease apart from the supernatural elements in the story. Both movies are currently on Amazon Prime if you want a nice early start to your Halloween season!
Next week won’t have a Jam Session, since you know, I’m getting married. But I’ll be back before long with more vibes and hypeness to share, and maybe with a new FC guest contributor! Stay safe out there!
