Alright, now we’re starting to pick up and I’m starting to get how they’re telling this story. Each episode focuses on one of the Crain children and their relationships surrounding them during this horrible time following Nellie’s Suicide.
This one focuses on Theodora. I was very interested to learn about her story especially because she was the one who was “Sensitive” to the other side. She has clairvoyant abilities that happen through touch and this is shown through great efforts on the part of both the Cinematographer and the Director. It’s subtle in some moments and glaringly obvious in others but that’s the way it’s supposed to be.
Theodora’s ability as a character to really see into everything is one of the highlights of the series so far. She doesn’t let anyone get away with lying to her and she actually uses her abilities to help her out with being a Child Psychologist which is pretty awesome. Unfortunately, this also leads to one of the darker scenes of the series when she uses her abilities to discover that the girl she’s helping is being molested by her father. Theo proceeds to call it in and get the man taken away.
The truth of Theodora is that she’s incredibly lonely and has set up wall after wall against everyone around her. When she finds out about Nellie’s suicide, she immediately moves into anger and doesn’t even cry for her until the final scene of the episode when she touches Nellie and finds out whatever truth is behind her death. She doesn’t just cry, she screams and sobs. When she started to recap her day to the girl she took home was a masterful performance by Kate Siegal.
This episode also featured an utterly terrifying scene featuring Luke as a child where he ends up in the previously unknown basement and comes face to face with a what is presumably the ghost of a bootlegger. They do really well playing with Lights and Sounds in this part cause the moment you see the ghost’s hand from behind the barrel, the rat’s stop squeaking, the music completely cuts and the flashlight(naturally) starts flickering. It’s a really great scene that actually leads really well into the next episode.
